Pearl Harbor - FDR's Speech

December 7 is the anniversary of the Japanese attack on the Pearl Harbor naval base.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made a speech to the Congress and the American people the day after.

Here are his words     (8:41 total)

This is really a moving speech - audio only.

Upgrade, Abandon, or Close Eyes and Hope

As the countdown gets lower on Windows XP like many others I am wondering what to do.

My other computer on the network is an Acer desktop that was purchased just before Vista was released. There were some hardware problems at first and the machine was shipped to Texas for what turned out to be a warranty covered hard disk replacement. Other than adding a gig of memory to bring the total up to two there has been no work needed and the computer has been a pleasure to use. All the updates have been faithfully installed.

I have Norton 360 on it as part of a possible user count of three under the license.

I keep asking myself if it is worth it to invest in a Windows 7 or 8 upgrade? According to the Microsoft upgrade advisers, either version will work with minimal problems. Most of my software is open source like Open Office and Lazarus and can easily be reinstalled. Norton has to have an upgrade path and Roboform should be upgraded anyway.

I did keep using Windows 95 far past its support termination with no great problem other than the fact the software itself was acting flaky with some of the newer programs I tried to run on it. As I recall I even used AVG as an antivirus program on it and had no problems.

I still am sitting on the fence with this though. I would love to try Windows 8 even though the monitor is decidedly pre-touchscreen. Even Windows 7 might be interesting because of the better functioning with newer software like IE.

I suppose what I will do is keep worrying as long as I can without doing anything and then when the pressure builds sufficiently something will be done.

Eclectic Interests

I was just looking through some of my recent posts and was quite amused by the variety of entries there are.

Georgy Girl, Grandpa, Smoke Smoke that Cigarette and Rolling in the Deep cover quite a ran. It gets even more diversified as you go back in the list.

It is kind of interesting dealing with a variety like this.   There should always be something to fit a particular mood. Many times it is helpful to have a change of pace. It is entertainment and not a way of life.

Did It Really Rain All the Time in the Dark Ages?

Thinking about climate change and other things just for the fun of it I googled the question above to see if I would get something sensible.

Sure enough, I got a lot of junk. That's to be expected.

What I did not expect was the first item. It was an article from Universe in 1999 by Greg Bryant named "The Dark Ages: Were They Darker than We Imagined?" I found the article fascinating.

We get so fixated on things like human caused global warming that we forget that catastrophic weather changes have been caused by natural forces through the ages.

It often gets difficult to remain rational with the pressures exerted by society.

Getting into the present world I have to admit I really enjoy Adele's "Rolling in the Deep". She has quite a voice.

Google Reader

I guess an important thing to note is that Google will be shutting down Reader this summer. Should be interesting finding out whether many people will be reading blogs afterward. What's next? Blogger? Hope not!

Even though I am mainly writing for myself, I really do enjoy it much more than the "social" sites.

Some Things We Never Know

I was in a panic today because I could not find my id. No money involved but I have photo id and other cards inside.

I tore the house apart looking for it.

I was just about to give up when for some reason I decided to look in the mailbox.

There it was with my picture looking out. Who looks in a mailbox on Sunday? But something made me check.

What a relief it is. No note or anything. Just the cards.

The Crisis

The Crisis by Thomas Paine is just so important to the history of the country that it is difficult to not be inspired by the words. What a fantastic work this is. The words just fit perfectly.

Dear John Letter

This is really classic country. Jean Shepard and Ferlin Husky singing "Dear John Letter".

Way back in 1964 when I was at Fort Hood Texas the local radio station seemed to like playing this. Due to the lyrics I do not think they were playing it as a morale booster but to this day I still sort of like the music. Funny how you never know what you will like.
